Smart Monitoring and Personalized Recommendations for Energy Consumption (PREC)
Overview
PREC (Recomendaciones Personalizadas para un Consumo Eficiente) is a smart energy monitoring platform built for ESPOL’s Gustavo Galindo Velasco campus. Developed through the Centro de Emprendimiento e Innovación (I3LAB) as part of the first edition of the InnovAcción program, the platform gives the university real-time and historical visibility into its energy consumption, paired with automated, personalized recommendations for reducing waste.
Problem Statement
A campus the size of ESPOL’s consumes energy across dozens of buildings and systems, but without centralized, real-time monitoring, identifying where and when energy is being wasted is largely guesswork. The project set out to close that gap: surfacing savings opportunities, consumption patterns and trends, and the campus’s most significant energy users in a single platform.
My Contribution
I contributed to two parts of PREC: the IoT sensor layer that captures real-time energy consumption data across the campus, and the alerts and recommendations model that analyzes that data to detect abnormal consumption patterns and generate personalized, automated recommendations for savings.
Results & Impact
PREC was selected as one of the winning projects of the first edition of I3LAB’s InnovAcción program and publicly launched on May 16, 2023, in front of the ESPOL community. The platform organizes its functionality around four pillars: energy monitoring, automated and personalized alerts, an energy census to identify significant consumption points, and overall, campus-wide historical consumption tracking. The project’s lead team was recognized with ESPOL’s “Insignia Líder Innovador” award for the work.
